Larger text size Very large text size A woman who took a Perth rabbi to court claiming she was sexually harassed and purposely excluded from converting to Judaism has had her claim thrown out by the State Administrative Tribunal. The matter was heard in the tribunal on May 2 this year, with the claimed discrimination dating back to February The Mount Lawley synagogue. Temple David The tribunal heard the woman was a conversion student at Temple David in Mount Lawley when she met the rabbi in June of the same year.
She claimed the rabbi took a special interest in her, and recommended a book that had “interesting chapters about sexuality and the wonders of the male body”. The woman said while she felt comfortable with the rabbi and had grown fond of him she felt “trapped”, because of his power over her eventual conversion. However, evidence given by the Temple David board found the woman’s behaviour towards the rabbi had become concerning when she began studying the conversion course.
The rabbi denied making any sexual advances towards the woman and said he thought she was a “particularly enthusiastic and interested” student. One witness told the tribunal they had noted the woman’s desire to turn the rabbi’s conversations with her in a sexual direction. The woman has attempted to follow up on her sexual harassment claim a number of times. As the communication between the woman and the rabbi continued, the rabbi brought his concerns to the president of the board. In letters dated in October , the woman emailed a number of prominent members of the Progressive Jewish community both in Australia and overseas, detailing allegations made against the Rabbi.

Rabbi Coleman transformed Perth Jewry by delivering revolutionary educational initiatives and critical infrastructure.
He has since had the merit to retire into the flourishing community and witness the fruit of his efforts. These and many other contributions to the community have earned him a CBE and many other public honours.
The extraordinary level of energy that Rabbi Dr Coleman dedicates to the many thousands upon thousands of lives that he has touched continues unabated today. An active nonagenarian, the Rabbi continues to teach a weekly Talmud class, officiates at the Synagogue of the Maurice Zeffert Home of which he is an Honorary Life Governor , and is actively engaged by congregants and community groups.
The launch of the book Spiritual Treasure not only recounts a life that has spanned some of the momentous events of modern history, but also serves as an important contribution to the historical literature of Jewish Australia. Rutland, The University of Sydney Being Jewish is seen as a way of life, so that Jewish women have been active in many different spheres within their community, including philanthropic endeavours, education and cultural life, assisting Jewish refugees before and after World War II, and supporting Zionism. However, the status of Jewish women in religious life is similar to the situation of women in all the ‘Abrahamic faiths’, including Christianity, and particularly orthodox Christianity.
It is also not dissimilar to that of women in the general Australian community, a subject of much critical commentary by feminist writers. More recently, however, key individuals have emerged as leaders in their own right, and both within progressive Judaism and Modern Orthodoxy, the role of women in synagogues has been changing. As well, Jewish women have played an active role in the feminist movement. Women and Communal Life:
