I was fortunate to be among those seated at this invitation-only feast earlier in the month. Before wading too deeply into my review, I should disclose that Demi is a longtime contributor to this blog and that I was invited to the event as her guest of honour. The supper club featured more than a dozen traditional Sri Lankan dishes. I liked everything I got to gobble. But tastiest highlights included an egg hopper bowl-shaped coconut pancake with a variety of hot and hotter! Speaking of The Coconut Tree, it was a lovely venue. Set up in old pub done up to accommodate folks more keen to dine, it had a welcoming and pleasant air about it. Says Demi about Sri Lankan food and her idea for a supper club:

Share this article Share His research compares in minute detail Leonardo’s version, completed in Milan in , with copies made by the Italian master’s own assistants, including the s Giampietrino painting now owned by the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Mr Daley expressed his surprise that the restoration had not taken the Giampietrino copy into account. Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’, seen after a controversial year restoration. The mural stands in Milan’s Santa Maria delle Grazie convent, which was bombed in World War II Fellow Leonardo expert Professor Pietro Marani, who headed the restoration, suggested it was possible that the two versions had never been exactly the same – and that, like other copies which alter small details, the painting held in London possibly ‘misunderstands’ the position of the sleeve.
In any case, he told the Independent: The original, painted as a mural in the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent, once came under attack from Napoleon’s forces, his bored soldiers pelting it with stones and dung. And in Allied forces dropped a bomb on the refectory, but luckily the wall bearing The Last Supper had been braced and reinforced with sandbags. Leonardo’s fresco technique means The Last Supper was never well placed to stand the test of time, and over the centuries the paint has become faded and cracked.
When the year restoration was commissioned it sparked a lengthy debate among art critics, with many insisting it had undermined Leonardo’s brushwork. Share or comment on this article.

Indulge yourself in London with Party Earth. Notting Hill, London — A century ago, supper clubs were high-class social destinations for the elegant partier, with nightly entertainment that involved five-star food, live shows, and bottle upon bottle of bubbly. Located in a converted warehouse, Supperclub features a bar area in a sultry and shiny red room, where a dapper dinner and club crowd can start the night with specialty cocktails and check out the modern paintings and abstract projections that dot the walls.
There, the fully reclined patrons enjoy experimental art performances like sword swallowers, acrobats, and mind-numbingly limber contortionists as they nosh on international dishes like satay soup and macaroons from the ever-changing set menu. Every night offers something different, from a back-to-school theme featuring plaid-clad schoolgirls handing out Calpol-laced shots to a burlesque dancer baring inflatable boobies, while a roster of international DJs follow the dinner acts, pumping out house beats that get the hard-charging crowd on its feet in every available space.

The archipelago and its people are brimming with variety and character, and the food scene has been making huge strides in recent times. So how lucky was I to visit it twice in the last 12 months, with the last of these trips coinciding with the annual gastronomic conference – Madrid Fusion Manila. Lechon roast sukling pig for breakfast, no better way to start the day!
The grand opening for Madrid Fusion Manila gastronomic conference An offshoot of this and now in its third year, the Madrid Fusion Manila takes place in the Filipino capital every April. The conference is an important date in the gastronomic calendar of the country and has helped to drive innovation and quality improvement in the food of the Philippines.

I decided five or six years ago it was time to realise my project of a life of Grose, a hommage, a profile, but not in the form of a classic biography. I would follow him into the bars and clubs, the backstreets, precincts and sink estates of 21st-century England, seeking out the low-lifers of today and recording the richly evocative, scabrous and exotic codes in which they communicate. Back in the publication of a short Grose glossary prompted a conversation with Roland White of the Sunday Times.
This is his article… Pay attention, all you hopper-arsed hoddy doddys. Gather round, you dandyprats, Jerry Sneaks and jolter heads. Any ale drapers and mutton mongers at the back should sit up straight and stop fiddling with their inexpressibles. And if anybody else wants to know what that was all about, they should adjust their periwigs and read on. In the age of the internet and instant communication we rather pride ourselves on the witty and imaginative way that we create new words.
We speak in a rather smug, knowing way of affluenza and low-hanging fruit. For no useful reason we refer to mobile phones as blab slabs and use them to diss our frenemies among the Twitterati. All in all we consider ourselves at the cutting edge of clever. Yet our slang turns out to be flat and colourless compared with the vigour and invention of the 18th century, when the only technology available was a quill pen and the pox.
